WELCOMES

You to

The
 Leigh Creek

Caravan Park

The town of Leigh Creek, an oasis in the desert, is nestled at the foot of the Northern Flinders Ranges and Gammon Ranges. It is situated 560km from Adelaide and 270km north of Port Augusta on highway 83. It is the last major town before the bitumen ends and is therefore an ideal stop-off point to relax, fuel up and stock up the pantry.
Less than 40km up the road you're on the dirt and it's here where your adventure really begins and the outback truly is your oyster. The Simpson Desert? Arkaroola or up the famous Birdsville, Oodnadatta or Strzelecki Tracks, you decide!
Don't go rushing off too quickly though as the Leigh Creek caravan park makes an ideal base camp whilst visiting the many local attractions such as Wilpena Pound, Sliding Rock, Parachilna Gorge or Aroona Dam where hopefully you will catch a glimpse of the rare Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby.
In the evening relax in the tavern and get to know the locals. You never know they might even reveal a few of their favourite places that you won't find listed in the guide books. The staff in the visitors centre in the town are available to answer all your questions and whilst there, why not book a free coal mine tour, after all the mine is the reason why the town of Leigh Creek is here today.

It is only in the last few years  that Leigh Creek has decided to "open up its doors" to welcome in tourism. Prior to this the town was considered to be a "closed town". Mining is still the major industry for Leigh Creek, however tourism and hospitality are allowed to co exist.
The Caravan Park was originally built in 1980 specifically to accommodate contractors in the region either involved in relocating the old Leigh Creek or in the production of coal. It was never designed for tourists or holiday campers.
On the 27th September 2002 the Leigh Creek Progress Association took over the running of the park to help initiate a wind of change and more importantly to accommodate all those tourists with their 4WD's, trailers and caravans that stream into the town on any given day.
All bookings, general maintenance, administration and cleaning is done on a voluntary basis.
In the past few years these volunteers have given up their time, toiled hard under many a hot sun to make major improvements to the park.

Most days Leigh Creek and its surrounds are blessed with wonderful vivid deep blue skies that contrast beautifully with the red desert and green saltbush.
Daytime summer temperatures can reach over 40°c. Winter nights can fall to zero degrees. Rainfall is low
and extremely variable and when it occurs can produce floods.
The air especially in winter is so clear, clean and crisp, and the sunrises and sunsets are fantastic.
In the evening why not pull up a chair sit back and relax around a campfire and enjoy a glass of your favourite red whilst bathed underneath a blanket of stars.
Among the many facilities in the town the Olympic sized swimming pool is a great place to cool off during the hot summer months.
For the golfers amongst you why not try your luck on our outback links, it's certainly not St. Andrews but the views and wildlife truly are breathtaking even if your putting isn't!

So what are you waiting for? See you soon!
