LOCAL PLACES OF INTEREST

There is much to see and experience in and around the town of Leigh Creek, so don't rush of too soon!

For further information on the local places of interest why not pay a visit to the Visitors Information Centre in town.
Telephone 08 8675 2723

One "Must do" is a coal mine tour, they are very interesting, informative and give the visitor an insight of just why the town is here. What's more the tours are FREE.

One of my favourite spots is the view from Redhill lookout located on the southern edge of town.
Sitting there parked up in your car with a commanding 360 degree view of the surrounding area you can see forever.
The flat arid land stretches out before you. The red dirt, pale green foliage of the saltbush and the red colour of the Flinders ranges contrasts beautifully with the clear deep blue sky.
From your position perched up high, you will see the road going south and like a river it meanders slowly away, twenty kilometres into the distance as far as the eye can see, and not a vehicle in sight.
Finally your wait is over. Way over in the distance you see the headlight of the train, not any old train, but the Leigh Creek coal train, and possibly the most important train in the whole of South Australia.

 The Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby

Andu is the Adnyamathanha (local Aboriginal people) word for the Yellow - footed Rock wallaby.
Colonisation brought with it much competition for these animals from feral goats and rabbits, predatory
foxes and feral cats.
Since 1996 Yellow footed rock wallabies have been successfully reintroduced to the Aroona Dam area which has been declared a sanctuary.
The reintroduction of this species is an ongoing project undertaken  by  Adelaide Zoo, Monarto Zoological Park, Leigh Creek Area School, Melbourne & Taronga Zoos, Flinders Power and the department of Environment, Heritage and Aboriginal Affairs.

Pay a visit to Aroona Dam and you too may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the shy and rather beautiful Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby.
